Transmission Oil / Transfer Case Oil

I usually go for BG Syncroshift I/II, and would otherwise go Redline, but if neither are available, what would be a good choise to go with at my local pepboy's, checker, etc to put in either my transfer case and/or transmission? I assume I would use something GL-5-spec (or whatever), but any specific weights to look out for?

GL-5 will wreck a transmission with yellow-metal material (aka the brass synchros in a DSM tranny). DSM transmissions use GL-4. QPR always has plenty of Redline fluids in stock so you're good to go.

Royal purple is another decent one to go with, but makes the tranny feel a bit notchier. It is similar to the redline in feel and price. I like the BGII the best for the medium-high quality stuff. That is totally personal preference and there are a lot of different views on here. I think I have tried most of the fluids though.

Re: Transmission Oil / Transfer Case Oil

After reading many UOA's, I've found Redline makes some of the highest quality fluids available. RP stuff it ok when new, but it wears out VERY quickly and loses all redeeming properties. I've personally tried BG Synchroshit 2 and absolutely hated it b/c it made my very good shifting tranny feel way worse than the old dirty generic fluid (very notchy and grinded a lot), I then switched to Redline and fell in love (very smooth, no grinding, quicker shifts, etc.). The S will be getting Redline once the warranty period is up.

Re: Transmission Oil / Transfer Case Oil

Like I said, there are many opinions on this. Shep runs BGII, so it can't be shit. He also recommends it to his customers. BGII doesn't shift quite as easily as Redline, but Redline seems to wear trannies out a bit faster. The BGII definately seems thicker too. Just like engine oil, some DSM's work better with different tranny fluid.

Re: Transmission Oil / Transfer Case Oil

ok, seriously, can anyone answer this?

I do appreciate the comments, but I'm not asking about BG or Redline products. I'm asking about something that'll work that I can find in a local store. Mobil-1 something or another, Lucas, etc. I'm not trying to cut corners, I'm asking because sometimes the fluid you want is not always available.

Re: Transmission Oil / Transfer Case Oil

Did you bother to read my first post? I do generally hide good info somewhere within the BS. Mobil 1 is a GL-5 and is not to be used in DSM transmissions. It says right on the bottles in the store what ratings they have. Most parts stores only carry a generic bulk GL-4 fluid so you'll have to go with that. I still don't see the problem with driving to QPR, which is in St. Paul, and buying the Redline fluid.

Re: Transmission Oil / Transfer Case Oil

Yeah, it will be really hard to find any quality GL-4 fluid at a regular parts store. When I needed to use some fluid just to get all the junk out of my trans I went to autozone and picked up their generic brand. I probably wouldn't recommend proglonged use of even that.
