internal damage?

With the hot weather my car has been getting really hot and I mean REALLY hot today I saw the temp gauge hit 210... and it has been acting really strangly. Then on my way home from a friends house I heard a loud clunk follow by some horrible grinding scraping noises, then the car died. I stopped immediately but I don't see anything visibly wrong, if I try to start up the car it makes the same horrible noises. How fucked am I?

Re: internal damage?

Are there any belts off? The crank pulley could have seperated, the alt belt fallen off and the waterpump stop spinning.

Re: internal damage?

oh so here is what i checked. I looked at the compressor wheel on the turbo, look and spun fine. i also checked the spark plugs to see if they got hit by something but they looked fine. all the belts were on and felt tensioned appropriately.
I think I may have thrown a rod or maybe my fly wheel exploded, I dont fucking know....

Re: internal damage?

I don't know what it could be based on that but i wouldn't drive the car anymore until i could draw some conclusions. A $20 fix on something it may be could turn into several hundred or over a $1,000 damage.

BTW- 210 degrees isn't anything out of the ordinary. Start getting over 213-215+, then she's getting pretty hot.

Re: internal damage?

Depends if it's a 1G or 2G. 210 is normal on a 2G but hot on a 1G.

Re: internal damage?

its a 2g with a 6 bolt. I normally run around 190 and the needle was definitely over 210 but past that point its hard to tell cuz the next mark is 250

don't crank it with starter, do it by hand and see how it feels..

Re: internal damage?

Yes it does turn over. I tried it once after it initially died and letting it cool down for a bit. Still sounded like hell...

Haven't tried turning it my hand

Re: internal damage?

pull the oil pan & see what's in it. MIne made that noise one morning and it was just one of the oil squirters. I replaced that & it was fine.

Re: internal damage?

Do a compression test(if you can). Pull the valve cover off and do a visual on the rotating parts up there. If you don't see anything, then it's time to pull the pan off. Could have been just about anything in there. Put a breaker bar/socket on the crankshaft bolt and rotate the engine over by hand(pull the spark plugs so it's easier). DO NOT start it. You already know it's sounds like shit in the condition it's in.

Re: internal damage?

Yeah, definatly pull the oil pan. If something went in the lower end chances are when you pull the pan your gonna find out what it is.

Re: internal damage?

When and if you're in their checking around, check the bottoms of the pistons too to make sure a piston skirt didn't bust off or something.

Re: internal damage?

im guessing it went a little past 210 and something got a little too hot heh. Drop the pan and examine the oil. That should tell you alot.

I would expect the worst though, it doesn't sound too good.

Re: internal damage?

I messed around with it a little tonight. Pulled the valve cover, everything looked fine there (as expected). Turned the engine over by hand, it gets real hard to turn when the timing mark is at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions but then moves smoothly once I get it past that point, and it didn't seem to make any noise or feel rough between. I didn't get the pan off, holy crap that is a lot of work. Am I going to have to drop my transfer case and down pipe? They both go under the pan and I don't see how you can get it off w/o getting them out of the way too.

Re: internal damage?

How about you just try and drain the oil first. Maybe you spun a bearing. If so, there may be metal shavings in the oil. You could also have someone check it out with a boroscope instead of removing the pan. Ofcourse the oil would have to be gone first. It will save you an assload of time if Mike gets out of the hospital or you can find someone vs pulling the pan.
