Stripped Threads-Help!
1992 Tsi Awd
What can I do?! I managed to strip the threads in the head for the turbo oil feed line. I started the car, and a waterfall of oil came pouring out. I ran the car like that for less than 30 seconds. I was pissed. Anyways, there is some good thread left, the bolt will scew in and get tight, and the all of a sudden get loose. Can I tap this without taking head off? Help!

You are pretty screwed. You are going to have to take the head off and take it in to a machine shop and have it heli-coiled. You could put in a longer bolt to grab on to deeper threads, but you probably won't find a longer banjo bolt. Maybe use a longer bolt to plug the hole and do a stainless feed line from the filter housing?

I was considering the stainless feed from the filter housing. Hmm, maybe I could tap the threads, crank the engine over and lets some oil flow through there removing all the chips. then put the line back on. I hoping there is a enough good thread that I can just re-tap it. But odds are against me... Hmm, maybe I could helicoil it!! I've never done that... Oh well I know people who have! I figure, I might as well try this shit before I take the head off. Thanks JET for the help!

No, don't retap it. You don't want chips floating in there. The hole will be deeper that what is actually needed. There should be some good threads left at the bottom. I am not 100% positive on that hole though. Retapping will do you no good, the threads are already gone. Helicoil is the other option, but the head needs to come off for that. I wouldn't risk getting chips in the head.

Fuck it. I retapped it, it still didnt do shit. I cleaned out the thole with q tips and cranking the engine over flowing oil out. My uncle stopped by, he is a master mechanic blah blah blah and has been doing shit for hundreds of years etc etc. He said this was a classic scenario, and I just need to heli coil it. He said i dont need to take the head off. I do understand why I should. I seriously just want to say fuck it and just drill tap the heli coil with the head on the car. Im sick of this shit. This is the only thing keeping me from driving my car.

But thats not doing it the right way. I should take the head off, and drill/tap so that I can make sure all the chips are gone. Just thinking off them all flowing into my turbo, fucking my freshly rebuilt turbo. Booooo!

i helicoiled my oil feed hole. It works just fine now. Just put some grease on a q tip and you should be fine. make sure no shavings are left.

All about how much you want to spend really...But a heli coil will do the trick, I had to do the same for my honda only it was two bolts for the head. and it torqued down just fine.

Yeah I really wouldn't sell it. And if for whatever reason my car gets messed up becasue of this (I seriously doubt it will) I won't bitch here. On that note, I DID IT! I frickin' did the scariest thing ever to my car. I drilled into the head, and tapped if for a heli coil. Putting in the actual heli coil was a bitch because the kit I borrowed from my work has been worn over the years. I test fit the bango bolt (I even ran a die over the bolt, refreshed the threads) and it goes in like a dream. I put the line on and torqued, cranked the car, and I get a dribble of oil coiming out. Whats fix? Thread sealant. I'm gonna slather some Permatex thread sealant with teflon (we've all used that before) right now, and put on some new crush washers.

Teflon doesn't actually seal threads, it just allows you to gain a better torque advantage on the thread surface to hole contact area.

Oh. Well I used thread sealer, with teflon in it. To seal the thread. im gonna let it sit for a few hours. Tonight I'll crank it over.
