Normal powder coating processes will effectively make the metal more brittle because of the high temperature. The wheel will still be rigid, but it will not be able to withstand forces like it originally did. There are low temp powders that cure at around 375 degrees that are meant to be used for wheels and other parts that see stress.

As far as this goes,( there is a debate but most metallurgy finds this to be untrue)

To weaken or change the metals structure, you would have to heat it much higher and much longer to do anything to it, also when you get into tempering and such, the way it cools down is also a huge part.

So yes this is untrue, (in our case anyway,)

I read on a couple metallurgy/engineering/machining sites about this and while it can/does happen it probably isn't necessarily something to worry about. I'd personally just rather err on the side of caution and use a lower temp application with a short heat and cooling cycle.
